Let's be clear: 5 fraud convictions is certainly more shocking than 2. But still a mystery why a guy w/even 1 conviction was anywhr near PM

    Honestly? My honest, constructive view?

    I'd take Coyne's side on this, for three reasons. First, he's actually been one of the strongest and most consistent critics of the government over the last few years, so much so that my Tory friends denounce him as partisan for the other side. Second, his name is in this exchange, and yours isn't. Given that, and given (3) the near-neutral expectations of his profession, your comments were the online equivalent of walking up to a waitress you'd never met, saying she pours coffee too quickly because she's a whore, insisting it's ok to say so because it's a public place, and then wondering why she wouldn't serve you your favorite breakfast the next morning.

    Hell, maybe she is a whore, but maybe not. But why bring that up? Why not just talk about the coffee? And isn't a little more evidence is necessary before you make it personal AND expect breakfast the next morning, no?

    I really do think people have totally lost track of what sounds offensive and what doesn't thanks to the Interweb. It's given us all the power to say things without a fact checker, to publish things without a second opinion to say "this sucks," and it's given us the power to snip from behind various walls without any need to see the human beings on the other side. Sure, that's valuable in some ways, because some things that aren't polite do need to be said. But that doesn't mean everything that's said actually fits that bill.

    Have we all responded accordingly? I know there's a few things I'd rather I hadn't said, but it felt so easy to say... Maybe this is your moment to wonder?

    Can't say I wholly agree with all your points, but do understand issues you are raising here. Will undertake to ruminate for a bit. Look in mirror, reflect, and think... be back shortly ;)
